I am currently a professor of software engineering at the University of British Columbia. I am first and foremost a professional software engineer, with 30 years of industrial experience developing large-scale software-intensive systems in the domains of telecommunications, aerospace, defense, transportation and software tools.

My most recent achievement is the development of a software development method: the Rational Unified Process®-a handbook of software engineering, which in many ways captures the lessons learned in my years as a system developer and as a consultant.

I participated in the design of two telephone switches, a few command and control systems, and most notably led the design of the Canadian Automated Air Traffic Control system.

I held several positions in my 16 years at Rational, and has been physically located in France, Sweden, California, and Canada, with long stays in Australia, UK, Germany, Japan, and China, and reported successively to Dr. Knut Ripken, Robert Bond, John Lovitt, Kathy Graham, Dave Bernstein, Dr. Rich Reitman, Dean Leffingwell, Dan Schiffman, Per Kroll, and finally after the acquisition by IBM: Steve Saunders.

Technical consultant in the areas of software architecture, embedded systems, command and control systems, distributed systems, object-oriented design, iterative development process, and the use of the programming language Ada.

Philippe Kruchten was formerly the Director of Process Development (RUP) at Rational Software. He then held the same title when Rational was acquired by IBM in 2003. He is currently a Professor of Software Engineering at University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.

Much of Philippe Kruchten’s work has involved the Rational Unified Process. The RUP is basically a huge document that outlines a detailed software development process framework. It was developed from years of experience from many companies and many projects. It is now available as a web-based product.

The RUP is not a one-size-fits-all process; rather it is a framework that can be customized to fit the size and needs of a particular software development organization. It allows for customization with the use of "plugins" which allows your organization to tailor the RUP. For example you can customize your process by importing a plugin for a type of standard software technology that you are using.

As Project Manager, Jonn completed the UBC Wireless WiFi network which spans the all UBC campuses. This is one of the largest campus wireless networks in the world and contributes to UBCs goal to become one of the best Universities in the world. Its has been a model for other large scale public and enterprise wireless network deployment. It continues to lead the way with the release of secure WiFi.

Andrew Woo’s experience in technology research and development spans nearly 20 years. In his role as NGRAIN’s Chief Technology Officer, he is responsible for applied research and technology development, product development, software quality assurance and intellectual property.

Andrew joined NGRAIN in 2001 as Director of Engineering. Prior, he was senior R&D Manager at Alias|Wavefront, where he was responsible for award winning 3D graphics products including Mac Sketch!, Studio and Maya, for which the Alias team won an Academy Award in technical achievement. Paul Halmshaw demonstrated ingenuity in the field of applied technology when he built his first computer at the age of twelve, and formed his own educational software company while still in high school.

Halmshaw's passion for technology and restless curiosity first benefited game producers Electronic Arts and Sony's Imagesoft Division before he moved on to develop video games for Sega and PlayStation.
