One of the reasons Rahel has earned the designation of fellow of the STC is her contribution to the body of knowledge that comprises technical communication. Rahel is at the forefront of the profession, working with new methods and technology as well as teaching solid foundational skills.
For example, Rahel teaches a course on creating structured content for content management, covering XML, DITA, and the basics of writing in a structured manner. She has organized and chaired a conference on content convergence and is organizing another one for 2010, in the hopes of alerting the profession to trends she is noticing.
Rahel speaks to groups outside the STC, bringing awareness and understanding of what technical communicators have to contribute to people who are not aware of technical communication. She helps people who specialize in other areas to realize what we do, what we're concerned with, and why. For example, Rahel is working with the High-Tech Communicators Exchange to present a talk on content convergence with them.
In her role as teacher, Rahel helps students learn through a mixture of lecture, group activities, some theory, and lots of practice. Her courses are very relevant and hands-on, for example teaching practical skills such as using XMetaL as an authoring tool.

Career profile:
I have been writing and producing technical documentation since 1993, when I supplemented a business degree with the Print Futures Professional Writing Program at Douglas College. I recently completed an MA in transpersonal psychology at Naropa University.
I enjoy making complex procedures and concepts easy to perform and understand. Finding the kernel that unlocks my own understanding so that I may communicate it to others is one of the joys of technical writing.
I have been working as an independent consultant since 1995, and appreciate the opportunities this mode of business affords for working with different groups of people and learning new procedures, products, and technologies.
Following two years of working in-house for Computer Associates, my clients have included Rockwell Software, Dynapro Systems Inc., Chancery Software, Xinex Networks, Edge Training and Consulting, and Wordsmiths International. I have written and produced many types of documentation, including:
User and system administration manuals * online help * web tutorials * training and quick reference materials * policy and procedures * white papers * newsletters * press releases * proposals * other marketing materials
Always working as a member of the team, my role has varied. I have worked as project manager and documentation team lead, hiring and supervising others when necessary. I have also worked closely with development teams to help design graphical user interfaces and test usability. A brief stint in technical support really helped me see things from the point of view of the end user, and this perspective is something I bring to every documentation project.
