Toope is a former dean of the faculty of Law at McGill, and is UBC's 12th president since 1913, when Frank Wesbrook first held the chief executive officer position in an institution that has since grown to more than 35,000 students, 10,000 faculty and staff, and annual expenditures approaching $1 billion. Rowland Lorimer is Director of the Master of Publishing program and the Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing at Simon Fraser University. He is Professor of Communication and past editor and past publisher of the Canadian Journal of Communication, of which he is now the treasurer. He is an honorary president of the Association for Canadian Studies and is a past president of the Canadian Association of Learned Journals.
For the last ten years his research has had a dual focus: the Canadian publishing industry and the mass media. Lorimer has carried out more than 20 commissioned studies on book, magazine, and scholarly journal publishing in Canada. His current work is oriented to facilitating the transition of journal, book, and magazine publishers into online publishing in part through the CFI-funded SYNERGIES project.
His research spans the mass media and focuses on the Canadian publishing industry. He has undertaken a wide variety of research projects that have resulted in books, scholarly articles, and major reports. His research in publishing has included numerous articles on the nature and dynamics of the industry, government policy, learning materials in Canadian schools, and scholarly journal publishing.

John's research & teaching focus is on the impact of digital technologies in the cultural sector (and particularly books and magazines), the history of digital media, and the emergence of digital genres and mythologies.
John has been working in the Internet and new media since the early 1990s. His professional background includes web development, content management, electronic publishing, SGML & XML, learning technologies, and virtual communities. John was a member of the first Master of Publishing cohort at SFU in 1995/96.
After working on educational technology at the BC's Open Learning Agency through the late 1990s, he completed a PhD in Education at the University of British Columbia where his research focused on the cultural history of personal and educational computing at Xerox PARC in the 1970s.
John has taught digital media to publishing students at SFU since 2001. He leads the two tech-oriented courses in the Master of Publishing program (PUB802 and PUB607), an undergraduate seminar on the future of the book (PUB401), and directs Digital Strategy workshops for the SFU Summer Publishing Workshops.
John's current R&D work includes an emerging set of web-based tools for supporting book & magazine workflows in editorial and production (see http://tkbr.ccsp.sfu.ca/research/xml-production), and historical research on digital innovation at Toronto's Coach House Press in the 1970s (see http://thinkubator.ccsp.sfu.ca/wikis/chb)

Lois joined the Foundation in 2008. She has a M.A. from the University of Ghana. She was hired to develop training on advocacy skills and legal knowledge for poverty law advocates funded by the Foundation.
Working with an advisory committee, she developed a two-week course to provide core training for junior advocates and a process for measuring the credentials of senior advocates. She is also organizes an annual Provincial Training Conference for Legal Advocates and does other work at the Foundation.
Before coming to the Foundation, Lois was a Fieldworker at Legal Services Society (LSS) where she was responsible for organizing training for advocates, outreach projects, and for some legal information publications.
Lois was called to the Bar in 1990 and worked as staff lawyer for West Coast Domestic Workers for over three years. Before coming to Vancouver, Lois worked on international development issues. She lived for over three years in Ghana, West Africa.

Janna joined the Foundation in 2008. She has a BA (Honours) in Political Science and a Law Degree from the University of Victoria. She was called to the Bar in British Columbia in 2003.
She completed articles at the Vancouver law firm of Guild Yule LLP and she went on to practice as a staff lawyer at Legal Aid (Legal Services Society of BC) for 3.5 years. At Legal Aid she provided summary legal advice to low income people across British Columbia through the Law LINE, assisting clients in a wide range of areas including poverty law and family issues.
Her current areas of focus at the Foundation include: the University of British Colulmbia, Legal Aid and Law Libraries.

Jo-Anne joined the Foundation in 1994. She holds a computer systems management degree and her AAT (Associate Accounting Technologist) designation from the Certified Management Accountants Society of BC. Wayne joined the Foundation in 2002. He has degrees in English, Psychology and Community Development. He was called to the Bar in 1983 and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2009.
Prior to joining the Foundation he was a Client Services Manager at the Legal Services Society's head office in Vancouver. He has also practiced law in Vancouver and was a partner with Lindsay Kenney LLP where he was a litigator with a focus on child protection law.
He has also served as a volunteer in many community and non-profit organizations and is currently on the Board of CUSO-VSO International. He is Chair of the Provincial Child Care Council of B.C.

In August 2010, I joined the University of British Columbia as the Director of SLAIS. Previously I was a faculty member at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) for 14 years.
My research explores the way interaction via computer media supports and affects work, learning, and social interaction. I examine how and what information is exchanged, knowledge is co-constructed, collaboration happens, and community forms in and in conjunction with online contexts.
My research focuses on how the Internet, computer-mediated communication and information technologies support work, learning and social interaction, and I approach this primarily from a social network perspective.

Research Interests
Financial records and information systems; information failures in financial systems; records and information risk management, in particular data loss; and the application of visual analytics to large archival datasets

Dr. Victoria Lemieux is a records and information management expert with over twenty years of experience in government, industry, and education. Her interest in financial records and their relationship to risk stems from her 1999-2001 doctoral research on the information-related causes of the Jamaican Banking Crisis (University College London 2002).
Following completion of her doctoral research, Dr. Lemieux joined Credit Suisse as a VP in charge of global records policy management, later taking charge of aspects of IT Security Policy development and managing the risk and security components of the bank's 2007 Swiss Franc 1.6bn network outsourcing (for which she received a "One Bank" award).
She then went on to lead the bank's European infrastructure client services technology risk team. Dr. Lemieux joined the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada in July 2008 and established the Centre for the Investigation of Financial Electronic Records (CIFER Research).
In 2009, she was among 10 new academics at the University to be presented with the Peter Wall Institute's Early Career Scholar Award. In 2011, Dr. Lemieux received an Emerald Literati Award for her paper on 'The Records-Risk Nexus.'
Her current research interests include the visual analysis of financial data and organizational and human behavioural risk factors in IT project implementation. Dr. Lemieux has been a designated Certified Information Security Systems Professional since 2005.

Areas of Interest
My major areas of research are information retrieval (IR) and digital libraries. I have done research and supervised doctoral dissertations in IR in text, multimedia, and the Web environments. My teaching areas reflect my research interests; I have taught courses on digital libraries, digital image collections, information retrieval (both theory and practice), indexing and abstracting, and electronic information systems
Biographical Sketch
I joined SLAIS in July, 2003 as Professor and Director of the School after an academic and professional career in Canada, the US, England and New Zealand, which began with an undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia, thus bringing me full circle.
I received a B.Sc. from UBC and an M.Sc. from McMaster University, both in Chemistry, an M.L.S. from the University of Western Ontario, and a Ph.D. in Information Studies from the University of Sheffield, England. I held professional positions with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited in Ontario as a Technical Information Officer, and with Agriculture Canada as Librarian at the Kentville, Nova Scotia, Research Station.
Before joining SLAIS I served on the faculty of the School of Information Sciences, University of Pittsburgh, USA for 15 years, most recently as Professor. While there I chaired the Doctoral Studies committee, and served as Department Chair for three years.
I have also held appointments at the School of Library and Information Studies at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, Canada, the School of Library Science at the Institiut Teknoloji MARA, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand
I have been active in the Information Retrieval and Digital Library research communities, serving as Conference Chair for the ACM International Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval in 1993 and the ACM International Conference on Digital Libraries in 1997, and as Conference Chair for the 2002 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science & Technology.
I am currently on the editorial boards of ACM Transactions on Information Systems, Information Processing & Management, Information Retrieval, and Text Technology.

Dr. Kasapi received his Ph.D. from UBC's Department of Zoology in 1997 specializing in Biomechanics. He joined The University of British Columbia University - Industry Liaison Office in 2002 and now serves as Associate Director, managing the Sponsored Research Group and co-managing Technology Transfer Group.
Before UBC he was actively involved in various aspects of operations and business development, spanning both public and private companies in the life sciences, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology sectors.
Dr. Kasapi has also consulted for private companies and has been actively involved in the development and implementation of strategic plans, and assisting in development of intellectual property and licensing strategies, and research programs.
At UBC, he orchestrated the formation of four spin-off companies: First Venture Technologies Corp. (TSX: FEB), Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies Inc., Boreal Genomics Inc. and Cripton Technologies Inc.
He is a member of the Association of University Technology Managers and the Alliance for Commercialization of Canadian Technologies Canada.

Angus serves on numerous boards including UBC Research Enterprises, Inc., Drug Development Inc., Paragon Testing Enterprises and Webnames.CA, Inc. He is currently a member of the Association of University Technology Managers and the Licensing Executive Society.
Angus graduated from UBC with a B.Sc. in Computer Science in 1983. In 1988, he joined the UILO where he has held various positions relating to industry sponsored research, technology transfer, and the management of UILO operations. He has played critical roles in the creation of many Canadian technology transfer and commercialization initiatives including: Westlink Technology Commercialization Internship Program; B.C. Advantage Funds (VCC) Ltd.; Flintbox™; Aggregate Therapeutics and the IP Toolkit; The Centre for Drug Research and Development; and the Canada California Strategic Innovation Partnership - IP Protocol.
The UILO conducts the technology transfer and commercialization activities at UBC. UBC consistently ranks among the top ten North American universities for its patenting and commercialization activities. UBC currently has over 250 licenses with companies around the world and has actively supported the creation of 137 spin-off companies.

As Research & Development Manager, Christo is responsible for the laboratory testing at Solegear. With his experience as a chemical engineer, Christo ensures the quality, integrity, and compliance of Solegear materials.
Christo is a published Chemical Engineer. His most recent achievement was the research and development of polymeric techniques and products that significantly decrease snow and ice friction. This research provided a competitive edge to Canadian athletes for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. His many previous publications are deeply concentrated on materials characterization.
Born in Vancouver, BC, raised in Greece, Christo holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of British Columbia.

In his role as CFO, Brian is responsible for managing Solegear's financial operations. Brian's experience in financial planning and public markets complements Solegear's ambition of smart growth and operational expansion.
Prior to his position at Solegear, Brian was the CFO of UC Resources Ltd. and a Director at Grenville Gold Corp., both Toronto Stock Exchange traded mining and metals companies. From 1995 to 2010, Brian was the Capital Markets Advisor for Naturally Advanced Technologies Inc., a cleantech company also traded on the TSX.
Brian has worked in technology companies in Japan, South Africa, and Holland, and was a Market Analyst for the US Department of Commerce at an embassy posting, providing advice for American telecommunications and technology firms seeking to enter the Canadian market.
Brian holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Carleton University, and an MBA from the University of Calgary and is a recipient of the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.
