Rowland Lorimer is Director of the Master of Publishing program and the Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing at Simon Fraser University. He is Professor of Communication and past editor and past publisher of the Canadian Journal of Communication, of which he is now the treasurer. He is an honorary president of the Association for Canadian Studies and is a past president of the Canadian Association of Learned Journals.
For the last ten years his research has had a dual focus: the Canadian publishing industry and the mass media. Lorimer has carried out more than 20 commissioned studies on book, magazine, and scholarly journal publishing in Canada. His current work is oriented to facilitating the transition of journal, book, and magazine publishers into online publishing in part through the CFI-funded SYNERGIES project.
His research spans the mass media and focuses on the Canadian publishing industry. He has undertaken a wide variety of research projects that have resulted in books, scholarly articles, and major reports. His research in publishing has included numerous articles on the nature and dynamics of the industry, government policy, learning materials in Canadian schools, and scholarly journal publishing.

John's research & teaching focus is on the impact of digital technologies in the cultural sector (and particularly books and magazines), the history of digital media, and the emergence of digital genres and mythologies.
John has been working in the Internet and new media since the early 1990s. His professional background includes web development, content management, electronic publishing, SGML & XML, learning technologies, and virtual communities. John was a member of the first Master of Publishing cohort at SFU in 1995/96.
After working on educational technology at the BC's Open Learning Agency through the late 1990s, he completed a PhD in Education at the University of British Columbia where his research focused on the cultural history of personal and educational computing at Xerox PARC in the 1970s.
John has taught digital media to publishing students at SFU since 2001. He leads the two tech-oriented courses in the Master of Publishing program (PUB802 and PUB607), an undergraduate seminar on the future of the book (PUB401), and directs Digital Strategy workshops for the SFU Summer Publishing Workshops.
John's current R&D work includes an emerging set of web-based tools for supporting book & magazine workflows in editorial and production (see http://tkbr.ccsp.sfu.ca/research/xml-production), and historical research on digital innovation at Toronto's Coach House Press in the 1970s (see http://thinkubator.ccsp.sfu.ca/wikis/chb)

Myrna brings a wealth of experience to her position, having worked in the public, private and non-profit sectors. She began her career has a social worker and later worked in human resources at Ontario Hydro. Whilst there, she helped to implement their call centres and then managed one of them for several years.
After moving to BC, she broadened her call centre experience when she joined TELUS as a regional director responsible for the operation of several large call centres in the province. Amongst other things, she was responsible for the national recruitment and training of staff.
It was while she was away on the 'trip of a lifetime' to Europe and Africa that she made the decision to leave the corporate world and move to the non-profit sector. She subsequently joined the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation as the Director of Volunteer and Community Initiatives and most recently worked at AIDS Vancouver as the Director of Programs and Services.
In her spare time, Myrna volunteers at Crossroads Hospice in Port Moody and also with the Canadian Cancer Society's Emergency Aid Program. She lives in Port Moody with her teenaged son, Luke.
