non profit organization delivering legal and social advocacy services on behalf of older adults who have experienced abuse or elder mistreatment or are vulnerable to abuse;
Operates the Elder Law Clinic providing legal services to adults over age 55 who would not otherwise be able to access justice due to low income, mobility difficulties or other issues;
BC CEAS' social advocacy arm and its legal advocacy arm operate as two separate divisions which provide complementary services. The legal arm is a “stand alone" law office providing representation and summary advice to low income or otherwise disadvantaged older adults (the “Elder Law Clinic").
The social advocacy arm consists of a variety of public education, law reform initiatives, and support and information programs delivered by trained and legally supervised lay advocates and volunteers.

Prior to West Coast LEAF, Mahbuba worked for over twelve years in the field of gender equality (including at the United Nations, where she was an International level employee) and established the first women's leadership NGO in her home country of Uzbekistan.
She has a Masters degree in Social Sciences and has been a visiting scholar at New York University at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study. Mahbuba says she likes to work for West Coast LEAF because she is back in her field of expertise and is eager to contribute her knowledge and broaden her experience.
Her hobbies are travelling and learning from other cultures, and she has visited about 27 countries.

Fiona studied English at the University of Ottawa. She has learned much from her extensive background with non-profit organizations such as community radio stations (on a local and national level), social activist groups and unions.
In her current position as Director of Communications, she draws on her years of proposal-writing, project development, communications and fundraising campaign experience. In her recent experience as the Coordinator of Children's Services for the B.C. Yukon Society of Transition Houses, Shahnaz maintained coordination among service providers across British Columbia, conducted needs assessment on trainings, developed and managed Provincial Advisory Committees, managed research, project development and project evaluation, and planned and delivered training for anti-violence workers and community members.
In 2004, Shahnaz co-authored a manual entitled “Violence Is Preventable" - Building Partnerships between Children Who Witness Abuse Programs and B.C. Schools.
Shahnaz's wonderful mother continues to be her teacher on feminism and her two grown children are her hope that a world free of discrimination based on race, religion and gender is not very far away.

Deanna Ogle has been a feminist since the age of thirteen when she looked the word up in a dictionary and realized it applied to her. She has worked in various feminist and equality seeking organizations including four years as the Centre Coordinator at the North Shore Women's Centre. Deanna has also worked in various international development organizations doing public education and developing campaign and policy materials on the importance of women's equality in alleviating global poverty.
In her spare time Deanna volunteers with Oxfam Canada and serves on the Board of Directors for the North Shore Women's Centre. This winter Deanna plans to learn how to properly quilt.

Before joining West Coast LEAF, Kasari practiced constitutional, equality and aboriginal law. She earned her degree in law from the University of Victoria, and her Master's Degree in International Human Rights Law from the University of Oxford.
Kasari has worked on children's rights, equality for Aboriginal women and prisoners' rights cases. Kasari is particularly interested in women's rights and describes her position at West Coast LEAF as “a dream job". In her spare time, Kasari enjoys yoga and travelling to new places.

Steve Rosenberg is an award winning writer/director based in Vancouver, BC. His dramatic shorts, Corona Station, Watching Mrs. Pomerantz, Vannica, Divine Waters and Shanti Baba Ram and the Dancers of Hope have screened at various prestigious festivals around the world.
In 2000, Watching Mrs. Pomerantz earned him numerous international awards, including the award for Best Director at The Toronto Worldwide Short Film Festival. His films have played on The Sundance Channel, CBC, WTN and Bravo.
He is an alumni of The Canadian Film Centre, Canada's most prestigious film institution. In 2006, hosted and produced Blink, a weekly TV talk show devoted to obscure films that come and go in a blink.
He freelances as a videographer/editor with many of his entertainment story segments being broadcast on ShawTV in Vancouver. Currently, Steve has both a feature drama and documentary project in development.
In 2010, Steve is launching Pull Focus, an innovative, non profit school that partners aspiring filmmakers with local charities to create much needed media content.
Rosenberg's goal is to teach individuals and organizations to use film to transform themselves and their communities.
Artistic Statement
I am inspired by directors such as Mike Leigh, Alexander Payne and Aki Kaurismaki all of whom have managed to successfully master a genre which includes a touch of tragedy, comic satire and semi ironic characters.
What distinguishes these films from other black comedies is the level of real compassion they have for their characters. Whether I am shooting a documentary or drama, I am passionate about creating films in which the characters are vividly remembered.

Before coming to Canada, she worked as an immigrants' rights activist in San Francisco. Having left a home, a community, and a movement behind, Moore found herself feeling isolated. Rhizome, and the intense work of planning and running the endeavor, became a means re-creating these things.
Moore reveals that it is precisely this desire for connection and community that inspired the name Rhizome. Referring to the network root systems of some plants like bamboo or ginger that grow horizontally just below the surface throwing up seemingly unrelated shoots in unpredictable ways, the metaphor invokes the often unseen connections that exist between individuals.
“It is a metaphor that brings people together," claims Moore, “because it is understandable to people from a variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
Moore explains: “we are attempting to challenge the idea that restaurants are machines that operate with clock-like precision to efficiently serve faceless customers. We want to adopt a more humanizing approach to food and community that is not focused solely on the exchange of money for goods and services but instead to collectively build a community resource, a commons of sorts."
