Prior to forming Lesperance Mendes, Robert was a partner in a large Vancouver law firm and the chairperson of its environmental and intellectual property practice groups.
Robert is a co-chair of the Canadian Bar Association's Environmental Law Section. His environmental practice emphasizes contaminated sites litigation, particularly leaking underground fuel storage tanks and related environmental claims and issues. His clients in this area are diverse and include international oil companies, property owners and private corporations.
Robert has practiced in the area of employment law since he was called to the Bar in 1984. His services include advising employers and employees on employment contracts, severance packages and wrongful dismissal disputes. In 2001 he commenced one of the first "mass dismissal" class actions in Canada, on behalf of a large group of employees residing throughout the country.
Robert's intellectual property experience commenced with litigation to enforce the trade-marks of the Expo 86 Corporation during the World Fair. Robert has represented clients in intellectual property cases involving patents, trade-marks and copyright infringement before the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the Court of Appeal of British Columbia and the Federal Court of Canada. He has also appeared before the United Nation's World Intellectual Property Organization.

Prior to establishing Lesperance Mendes in 1997, John Mendes was a partner in a large Vancouver firm and the chairperson of its construction law group.
John has been the chairperson of Lesperance Mendes' construction defect practice group since the inception of the firm. Lesperance Mendes has represented private and public owners in claims arising out of the defective construction of condominiums, commercial buildings, bridges, highways and other infrastructure projects. Such disputes have included:
* Claims arising out of building envelope, structural, mechanical and electrical defects
* Claims under "2-5-10" new home warranties and building envelope renovation warranties
* Subsidence claims arising out of poor soil conditions
John's construction law practice has included advising government agencies, private owners and contractors on the tendering and procurement of public, private, design-build and "P3" projects. He has also been involved in construction disputes arising out of pre-contractual representations, extra work, changed site conditions and schedule delays, and claims under various forms of construction bonds and insurance.
John has advised strata corporations and owners on a wide range of governance issues as part of his condominium law practice. Lyndsay is an associate with Caroline + Gislason. She was called to the bar in 2011 after articling with the firm and clerking at the B.C. Court of Appeal. During a summer job with the firm she was an integral part of efforts opposing the closure of a long-term care facility on Vancouver Island.
She received a Bachelor of Arts with distinction from the University of Victoria where she took an eclectic mix of courses from sciences, humanities, languages, and social sciences with a focus on international and comparative political science.

Joanna's practice emphasis is on union and employee side labour law as well as human rights litigation. She is a strong advocate for the rights of individual workers as well as a sophisticated strategist and advisor to union leadership.

After having spent several years working as a railway carman and leading the fight for the creation of a single union for all the skilled trade workers, Gary Caroline resigned from CP Rail and enrolled at Osgoode Hall Law School. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1989. He is now licensed to practice law and represents clients in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Saskatchewan.
Gary has developed an extensive practice representing and advising trade unions across Canada. He also maintains personal ties and interest in the labour movement. He is often called upon to offer strategic legal advice and to assist in negotiating major collective agreements.
Over the years he has also provided legal advice and representation to groups and individuals defending human and civil rights including those of immigrant workers and other marginalized groups.
Gary practices primarily in the courts and labour tribunals but throughout his career he has represented grievors in hundreds of arbitration cases for a range of unions from public sector unions to the building trades.He has developed a particular expertise in defending bargaining rights eroded through the sale of business, alter egos and the merger of government services.
He has also developed expertise in pension issues and advises and represents union pension plans. He represented the BCNU in their fight against cuts to retiree health benefits under BC's Municipal Pension Plan.
Gary has represented many parent and local unions in internal election disputes, trusteeship and disaffiliation cases. After a three year fight, he was successful in convincing the Ontario Labour Relations Board to uphold a trusteeship over a 35,000 member local union whose leadership had engaged in discriminatory and corrupt practices.
Gary was born in Montreal. For twenty-seven years he worked and lived in Ontario. He has lived in Vancouver since 2003 but continues to represent clients across Canada.

Lois joined the Foundation in 2008. She has a M.A. from the University of Ghana. She was hired to develop training on advocacy skills and legal knowledge for poverty law advocates funded by the Foundation.
Working with an advisory committee, she developed a two-week course to provide core training for junior advocates and a process for measuring the credentials of senior advocates. She is also organizes an annual Provincial Training Conference for Legal Advocates and does other work at the Foundation.
Before coming to the Foundation, Lois was a Fieldworker at Legal Services Society (LSS) where she was responsible for organizing training for advocates, outreach projects, and for some legal information publications.
Lois was called to the Bar in 1990 and worked as staff lawyer for West Coast Domestic Workers for over three years. Before coming to Vancouver, Lois worked on international development issues. She lived for over three years in Ghana, West Africa.

Janna joined the Foundation in 2008. She has a BA (Honours) in Political Science and a Law Degree from the University of Victoria. She was called to the Bar in British Columbia in 2003.
She completed articles at the Vancouver law firm of Guild Yule LLP and she went on to practice as a staff lawyer at Legal Aid (Legal Services Society of BC) for 3.5 years. At Legal Aid she provided summary legal advice to low income people across British Columbia through the Law LINE, assisting clients in a wide range of areas including poverty law and family issues.

Jo-Anne joined the Foundation in 1994. She holds a computer systems management degree and her AAT (Associate Accounting Technologist) designation from the Certified Management Accountants Society of BC. Steven Meurrens was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was raised in Vancouver, Tianjin, and Beijing. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto, where he obtained a Juris Doctorate in 2009. He also attended the University of British Columbia, where in 2006 he completed a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Political Science and a minor in Chinese Language. Mr. Meurrens was admitted to the British Columbia Bar in May, 2010.
Steven practices in all areas of immigration law, including work permit applications, BC provincial nominations, skilled worker applications, spousal sponsorships, applications on humanitarian and compassionate grounds, investor applications, residency and sponsorship appeals, the establishment of immigration trusts, and judicial review applications at Federal Court.
Mr. Meurrens is currently a member of the executive of the Canadian Bar Association of BC's Immigration Law Section. He is the chair of the CBA BC's sub-committee for the Provincial Nomination Program. He is also a volunteer with Access Justice.

Virginie was born and raised in Quebec. She is bilingual in French and English, fluent in Spanish, and speaks conversational Mandarin. She has traveled extensively in Latin America, Europe, China and South Korea. She studied Mandarin in China and volunteered with underprivileged children in Guatemala.
Virginie is currently on the Executive of the Canadian Bar Association of B.C.'s Immigration Law Section, where she serves as Events Coordinator and Chair of the Section's Canada Border Services Agency sub-committee. In addition, she is a member of l'Association des juristes d'expression française de la Colombie-Britannique and of the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers.

Rishi (rih-SHE) Gill, a co-chairman of the Legal Aid Action Committee within the B.C. Trial Lawyers Association, says legal aid is a cornerstone of the court system, yet governments have consistently cut funding for two decades.
Since the 1990s, Gill says the government has collected almost a billion dollars through a tax on lawyers' fees meant for legal aid, but the money has gone into general revenue.
He says that if the lack of duty counsel in courts doesn't convince the government to put more money into legal aid funding, trial lawyers will consider withdrawing services from gang and murder trials.

Brian is the National Co-Chair of FMC's Mining Group. His mining practice involves all phases of mining from exploration, development and production through to reclamation. non profit organization delivering legal and social advocacy services on behalf of older adults who have experienced abuse or elder mistreatment or are vulnerable to abuse;
Operates the Elder Law Clinic providing legal services to adults over age 55 who would not otherwise be able to access justice due to low income, mobility difficulties or other issues;
BC CEAS' social advocacy arm and its legal advocacy arm operate as two separate divisions which provide complementary services. The legal arm is a “stand alone" law office providing representation and summary advice to low income or otherwise disadvantaged older adults (the “Elder Law Clinic").
The social advocacy arm consists of a variety of public education, law reform initiatives, and support and information programs delivered by trained and legally supervised lay advocates and volunteers.
Research and Other Projects
BC CEAS is the only non-profit organization in Western Canada offering a mix of legal psycho-social and justice based supports to older adults. BC CEAS has staff from different professional fields.
