Presented in partnership with the YWCA Focus program, Home Improvement for Women is an 11 week long part time course (3 times a week) of interest women wanting to learn how to do more of their own home repairs and maintenance. The curriculum includes carpentry basics, bench work and joinery, furniture building and refinishing, electrical, plumbing and piping.

Women learn basic home repair skills, how to use hand and power tools, drywall repair, painting and simple plumbing. Program participants make shelves, tables, and work on other home projects.

Participants work together and develop enhanced self confidence through their work.

Paul joined VPL in June 2003 from the Burnaby Public Library where he had been Chief Librarian since 1989. He has been involved in various professional activities since 1989, including serving as President of the Canadian Library Association and the British Columbia Library Association. In 2002, Paul received the Canadian Library Association's Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award, and the British Columbia Library Association President's Award for contributions to the Association. In 2001, he received the University of British Columbia's School of Library, Archival and Information Studies Alumni Service and Leadership Award.
