In August 2008 The Canadian Cancer Society, BC & Yukon Division appointed Ron Kuehl as Vice President, Revenue Development.
Since taking up the position Ron has reorganized the Revenue Development department to reflect a new philosophy of giving based on a responsive relationship with donors. He is confident that the new approach is better given current fundraising challenges in the marketplace. “People have not stopped giving but we have to do a better job of showing that a donation to the Society is the best investment in the cancer cause and connect our donors and their giving with our mission," he said.
His expertise is needed to raise more funds to help combat the expected rise in cancer cases. With a proven track record in securing major and corporate gifts, Ron has already identified a high level donor to assist with a cornerstone contribution for a major capital project in northern BC, and secured a partnership with a national corporation to deliver prevention and support messaging and significant financial support.
Ron holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Economics from Tabor College, Kansas, and honorary Doctorate from Regent University and is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and brings over 20 years of fundraising experience in the public and non-profit sectors to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Before joining the Canadian Cancer Society, Ron worked as the senior vice-president for external relations at Trinity Western University, was the senior director of development with Canuck Place Children's Hospice, the vice-president for advancement with Tabor College, and a marketing manager with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
“Ron has been a welcome addition to our organization," said Barbara Kaminsky, CEO of the Canadian Cancer Society, B.C. and Yukon Division. “His demonstrated leadership in fundraising, marketing, and government relations helps us advance the Society's mission and vision throughout our division."

As the Vice President, Cancer Control, Cathy Adair is responsible for a broad portfolio comprising prevention; support services; research and policy, planning and evaluation across the Province and Yukon Territory. Under her management and guided by her expertise, the Canadian Cancer Society has developed of a five-year vision and strategic plan for the ongoing fight against cancer as the impact of cancer escalates with a growing and aging population.
She has made a significant contribution in her current role enhancing the Society's reputation and extending its influence on cancer issues that effect the population in BC and the Yukon. She leads and manages the Society's cancer prevention strategy that includes health promotion, community action and advocacy. Working with the CEO, Barbara Kaminsky and a team of prevention staff she has advanced the BC & Yukon Division as a leader in cancer prevention in Canada and influenced provincial and territorial governments.
Cathy is dedicated to ensuring individuals with cancer receive the services they need all along the cancer journey. She understands the Canadian Cancer Society's role includes not only direct service delivery in some areas, but important partnerships, advocacy where gaps exist and the provision of cancer information and services.
Cathy worked for the Canadian Cancer Society from 1995 through 2001, initially as Director Program Services and later as Director, Program Services & Regions. She said her commitment to cancer control, the strong leadership of Barbara Kaminksy and the passion of the people at the Society drew her back to this outstanding organization.
Her broad experience in social services and health services over 33 years was gained in developing and managing community based services in municipal, provincial, and not for profit organizations. Her appointments include Regional Director of Geriatric Mental Health Services, Ministry of Health (Fraser Valley); Continuing Care Manager, South Fraser Health Services; Director, Regional Coordination, Ministry of Health; Executive Director, Canadian Diabetes Association (BC & Yukon Division); and Executive Director Central City Care Society.
She has a Master Degree in Social Work and a certificate in Executive Development from UBC.

Barbara Kaminsky has made a significant contribution in cancer control in BC and the Yukon over the fifteen years that she has proficiently led the organization as Chief Executive Officer.
The Canadian Cancer Society BC and Yukon Division has evolved to become a leader in cancer prevention and cancer research funding, an influential advocate for cancer issues that affect the health of families and a responsive provider to the needs of people with cancer.
In the past decade and a half, the revenue of BC and Yukon Division has increased from $11.8 million in 1994 to $35.6 million in 2009. Both successful signature fundraising campaigns Relay For Life and Cops for Cancer now contribute some $10 million in income per year.
A number of mission-related accomplishments have taken place under her leadership including the expansion of Camp Goodtimes and the provision of a long term site for this innovative and accredited summer recreation program. A capital campaign delivered the funds to build a third residential lodge for cancer patients in the Interior in 1996 and currently a campaign is underway to construct the fourth lodge in Prince George coincident with the opening of a new cancer centre in 2012.
However it is clearly in the area of cancer prevention and cancer control where Barbara has excelled. Over the past decade, she has been instrumental in changing the way government agencies, health care professionals and individuals view cancer and their role in preventing it.
The media has come to recognize Barbara as the go to person for understandable commentary on cancer issues.
She has been an impassioned spokesperson on the importance of good health and protective behaviours to reduce the risk of cancer, and the responsibilities of governments to ensure healthy communities. Early on she recognized the need for a proactive approach to community inclusion.
As a champion of prevention, Barbara was instrumental in the development of a prevention strategy for BC and the Yukon and secured valuable partnerships with the BC Healthy Living Alliance and the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer. Under her leadership there were important changes to the Tobacco Act and the establishment of a Canadian Cancer Society Chair in Cancer Primary Prevention at UBC.
She was very successful in attracting donors and corporate supporters to contribute to prevention programs. More than $20 million has been invested in prevention and advocacy in the past five years,
Barbara is the current Chair of the Prevention Working Group for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation 2020 initiative-The Future without Breast Cancer and Past Chair of the Primary Prevention Action Group of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer.
She considers leading the BC Healthy Living Alliance in developing The Winning Legacy-an evidence-based plan to assist the provincial government in realizing its dream of being the healthiest host of any Olympics-as a highlight of her career.
Barbara has authored several publications and studies on planning and resource allocation, which have been developed for use by the BC government and for Health Administration students. Most recently, she co-authored a book entitled, The Health Impact of Smoking & Obesity and what to do about it.
She took up the position with the Canadian Cancer Society in 1994 after working in healthcare management as Vice President of Clinical Services at Surrey Memorial Hospital; head of a health care management consulting group, and Administrator of Richmond's Long Term Care Program. Her first professional experience was in social work at Vancouver General Hospital.
In addition to certification as a health executive, Barbara has three degrees from the University of British Columbia-a BA in English, a Master of Social Work, and a Masters of Science in Health Services Planning and Administration. She is currently an adjunct professor at UBC.

June 27, 2011 - Providence Health Care Research Institute (PHCRI), home to several world-renowned research groups, has named Ms. Karimah Es Sabar as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees. In affiliation with the University of British Columbia, the Research Institute's main objective is to improve the health and treatment of patients and residents of Providence Health Care (PHC) through relevant, ethical and inspired health research.
Ms. Es Sabar, currently the Senior Vice President, Business and Strategic Affairs at The Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD), also serves as a board member for a number of organizations, including the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research and The Vancouver Prostate Centre, a UBC and Vancouver General Hospital Centre of Excellence.
As the new Board Chair for PHCRI, Ms. Es Sabar brings with her strong ties to the local and international research communities as well as experience from her dynamic career in the life sciences industry.
Under the leadership of two exceptional past chairs, Dr. Simon Pimstone and Dr. Michael O'Shaughnessy, research funding at PHCRI has consistently grown over the past six years. PHCRI is the research arm of Providence Health Care, which includes laboratory, clinical and epidemiological research in several fields, such as HIV/AIDS, heart and lung disease, urban and mental health and elder care.
Ms. Es Sabar's appointment will support growth of scientific discovery and funding at PHCRI by furthering partnerships with the biotech community, government agencies and other research organizations throughout the Lower Mainland, the province and world.
Under Ms. Es Sabar's direction, Providence Health Care Research Institute will strive to reach new heights in exploring innovative areas of research and funding sources.
Prior to her current position at CDRD, Ms. Es Sabar led BC Biotech in re-engineering and rebranding the organization to LifeSciences BC. As President, she led the organization to its greatest level of success as a strong business development organization for the life science industry and the scientific research community.
Ms. Es Sabar has held senior management positions with international and multinational companies, most notably as Director, International Division and later Director, Marketing and Business Development at Connaught Laboratories Limited (now Sanofi Pasteur) based in Toronto.
More recently, Ms. Es Sabar was Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Medsurge Medical and was the founder and managing director of SAL Healthcare Limited, a leading pharmaceutical marketing and distribution company based in Kenya.
Ms. Es Sabar received the CABE Award (Canada's Gold Award for Business Excellence) while at Sanofi Pasteur, was the recipient of the Women of Distinction Award in 2010 for Industry, Science and Technology, was listed on "The Vancouver Power 50" listing of the most influential people in BC as published by Business in Vancouver, and most recently on "BC's Top 100 Women of Influence" listing by the Vancouver Sun.
Ms. Es Sabar holds a BSc. Joint Honours Degree in Biochemistry/Chemistry from the University of Salford, England and a MSc. Degree in Neurochemistry from the Institute of Psychiatry, University of London, England.

Dr. Cullis is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, UBC, and Chief Scientific Officer and Senior Vice President, Research, at Inex Pharmaceuticals Corporation. His laboratory is focused on the development of liposomal systems for delivery of conventional and genetic drugs.
This work has led to two products that have been approved by regulatory agencies for the treatment of cancer and its complications. Dr. Cullis has published over 250 scientific articles and is an inventor on over 30 patents.
Dr. Cullis was awarded the B.C. Science Council Gold Medal for Health Sciences in 1991, the international Alec D. Bangham Award in 2000 and the B.C. Biotechnology Association Award for Innovation and Achievement in 2002. He was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 2004.

Ms. Dakers was President & CEO of Neuromed Technologies Inc., a private biopharmaceutical company developing drugs for chronic pain, anxiety, epilepsy and cardiovascular diseases.
As co-founder, she built the company from inception and raised three rounds of venture financing totaling approximately $70 million. Under her leadership, the company filed its first Investigational New Drug (IND) application for a novel chronic pain drug and commenced Phase 1 clinical trials.
Prior to co-founding Neuromed, Ms. Dakers was a Senior Manager for life sciences technology transfer at the University Industry Liaison Office (UILO) at the University of British Columbia. In this capacity, she was involved in the creation and spin-off of more than a dozen start-up high-tech and biotech companies.
Ms. Dakers served as Chair of BC Biotech, the association representing and promoting the province's biotech firms. From 1999 to 2001, she served as a board member of AceTech Academy of Technology CEOs. Ms. Dakers has also served as Vice-President of the Association of University Technology Managers and as Director of the Premier's Advisory Council of Science and Technology.
After graduating from University of Guelph with an honours degree in marine biology, Dakers worked as a research biologist for a B.C. salmon aquaculture company. In 1989, she joined UBC's University-Industry Liaison Office (UILO) where, as senior manager for life sciences technology transfer, she learned about venture financing, licensing agreements and the complex world of commercialization.
I was lucky enough to work with creative people in an office that was leading the way in tech transfer in Canada, says Dakers.
She acknowledges that there are strong and polarized feelings on commercialization -- some believe it doesn't fit with the research and education mandate of a university.
If you do it right, you can enhance a university's reputation, she says. A spin-off is the vehicle to enable discovery.
After eight years and helping to create more than a dozen spin-offs, Dakers decided she had done enough facilitating and wanted to get in the game.
She had worked with UBC neurobiologist Terry Snutch on some research contracts and was impressed with his stellar science. He has developed compounds to block calcium channels in the brain that transmit pain signals. The drugs are aimed at patients with chronic pain and other severe neurological disorders, such as epilepsy.
The pair -- with no formal business training between them -- launched Neuromed Technologies Inc. in 1998 to commercialize Snutch's ideas in developing pain-killing drugs.
Early on I could have simply licensed out the technology and walked away, says Snutch. It's been a very long road but the experience has been worth all the effort - there hasn't been a dull moment. And although there's still a long way to go, we based Neuromed on solid scientific rationale and never wavered from the original concept of drug development as the best way to create and maintain value.
I jumped in and never looked back, says Dakers. We were passionate about what we were doing. We never lost faith.
But their faith was tested. In January 2002, the first compound failed at a critical point in the financing process. It was one of the sickening plummets in what Dakers calls the roller-coaster ride of running a spin-off. She spent a year getting investors excited once again about the venture and the second compound they were set to try.
By January 2003, she had raised a total of $70 million for Neuromed, which propelled it toward what she describes as her proudest moment -- when the first clinical trial participants received doses of calcium channel blockers.
But with that success came a very difficult decision. In October 2003, Neuromed had secured the third round of financing. The agreement with lead investor, MPM Capital, meant the company would have a new CEO operating from the U.S. Dakers had to let go of Neuromed, although the research base remains in Vancouver and Snutch continues as vice-president and chief scientific officer.
