Rishi (rih-SHE) Gill, a co-chairman of the Legal Aid Action Committee within the B.C. Trial Lawyers Association, says legal aid is a cornerstone of the court system, yet governments have consistently cut funding for two decades.
Since the 1990s, Gill says the government has collected almost a billion dollars through a tax on lawyers' fees meant for legal aid, but the money has gone into general revenue.
He says that if the lack of duty counsel in courts doesn't convince the government to put more money into legal aid funding, trial lawyers will consider withdrawing services from gang and murder trials.
Gill says it's a coincidence that the cases of accused Stanley Cup rioters were put off in Vancouver today, but the resulting backlog is an example of what's to come if demands for increased legal funding aren't met.

Louise is a classically trained musician from the UK. She started her musical journey at 3, when her mother taught her how to play recorder, and she still remembers the first time she ever visited a music school at the age of 5, heard beautiful unfamiliar sounds emanating from every room, and thought: “I want to live here!"
She grew up near London and earned scholarships to study cello and piano at Trinity College of Music, before obtaining her music degree from the University of Leeds. She spent a lot of time in New York, where she was Head of the music department at a performing arts camp. She lived in Scotland for 7 years, where she managed a community arts venue, alongside teaching music lessons, performing in bands and musical directing.
Louise moved to Canada in 2010, and very much enjoys her job as Registrar for the VSO School of Music, as it combines her loves of music, connecting with people and organizing! She looks forward to meeting all prospective students, and welcoming them into the VSO School community.

Jeff Alexander was named to the position of President & CEO of the Vancouver Symphony Society in September 2000. In this position he is the chief administrator for the organization, responsible for overseeing board, government and community relations, long-range planning, and day-to-day management for Canada's third largest symphony orchestra with an annual budget of over $13 million.
Since his appointment, Alexander has worked closely with VSO Music Director Bramwell Tovey, the organization's Board of Directors, musicians, staff and volunteers to strengthen every aspect of the organization's artistic, fiscal, community, governance and administrative activities.
With the implementation of a new strategic plan in 2002, subsequent updates, and a wide variety of new programs, the organization has experienced significant growth in subscription and single ticket sales, as well as individual, corporate and government support, resulting in a surplus on annual operations for six consecutive years beginning in fiscal 2004.
Prior to joining the VSO, Alexander spent sixteen years at the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the last twelve as General Manager. As such, he was the "second in command" for the sixth oldest and eighth largest orchestra in the United States, with an annual budget of $28 million.
In this position, he managed an orchestra of 99 full time musicians, and was responsible for all elements of program planning, concert production, and orchestra relations. He participated in four master agreement negotiations; planned and managed 12 domestic tours, each with concerts in Carnegie Hall, and four international tours, with concerts throughout Europe and Asia.

As the Director of the Vancouver Art Gallery, Kathleen Bartels has led the 80-year old organization through a period of unprecedented growth. Since she joined the Gallery in 2001, the institutional endowment has increased from $200,000 to more than $10 million and membership has grown from 5,000 to a high of 50,000 Gallery members. The Gallery's permanent art collection has recently passed the 10,000 mark, representing approximately 4,000 acquisitions under Bartels' leadership.
The Gallery now has plans to construct a new building of approximately double the size of the current facility. With early lead funding of $50 million from the Province of British Columbia towards the estimated $300 million project, as well as private pledges totalling more than $40 million and reservation of a city-owned site in downtown Vancouver---all prior to the launch of a public capital campaign---the Gallery is well on its way to realizing this vision.
Bartels' artistic direction has resulted in a significant transformation in the program, melding a dynamic mix of contemporary and historical exhibitions that bring the best of the art world to Vancouver and the best of Vancouver to the world.
Prior to joining the Vancouver Art Gallery, Bartels was on staff with the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles for thirteen years, serving as the museum's assistant director from 1997-2001. Born and raised in Chicago, Kathleen Bartels earned a BA in Photography at Columbia College and undertook graduate research in Pacific Art History at the University of Hawaii.
Bartels has received many awards during her distinguished career. She has been named one of Vancouver Magazine's “Power 50" most influential leaders for the past seven consecutive years and was honoured with the prestigious Hadassah-WIZO “Women of Achievement" award.
She has served on numerous art panels, boards and committees and is currently a member of the British Columbia Achievement Foundation Board, as well as a member of the Membership Committee of the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD).
