Coby has a diverse background in career education, human resources and the arts. Tia has been involved in Hotel/ Food and Beverage industry for over 20 years. She began in the industry in her hometown of Renfrew, northwest of Ottawa in a family-owned food service operation.
It was this employment opportunity which solidified her choice of a career in the hospitality industry. Her love for travel, meeting new people, and discovering the pleasures of food and beverage was a perfect fit for managing food and beverage operations within a hotel environment.
After graduating from the George Brown School of Hospitality in Hotel Management, Tia immediately went to work as a restaurant supervisor for L'Hotel, Toronto, a Canadian Pacific Hotel and Resort (this company is now known as Fairmont Hotels in Canada).
On her travels from Toronto to Vancouver she has had the privilege of working with many fine hotel companies such as Delta Hotels and Resorts, Renaissance, Marriott, Sheraton, and most recently Crowne Plaza.
The positions she has held range from Executive Committee member for a food and beverage division, Catering Director, Director of multi-unit food and beverage operations to a server/bartender/dishwasher, all important positions within a hotel environment.
During her career, the most enjoyable aspect was always designing, developing and executing training programs for her employees. Most recently she has become an independent consultant within the industry enabling her to spend more time with her young family.
Tia believes motivated people, who truly enjoy the experience of human interaction are the backbone of the hospitality industry. She also holds "leadership and mentoring" as cornerstones to successfully cultivating the spirit of hospitality. Currently Tia is pursuing an MBA with a focus on Human Resources at the University of Phoenix. Tia is a member of the faculty of the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute.

My name is Marisa Bonilla and I am the Internship Coordinator for Upper Career College of Business & Technology (UCCBT).
We have Business students who are required to do internships as part of their program at U.C.C.B.T. the main goal of the program is to have students gain professional experience in the Canadian workplace. These are unpaid internships, so the department where the student is placed in receives a free set of hands to be utilized to the best of their capabilities.
All students have been in and graduated from advanced ESL courses. Once they complete the ESL courses at our sister school, SEC Inc. (Study English in Canada), they become students of the Upper Career College of Business & Technology. Many students take our ‘Understanding the International Market Place' course, which is our Business management course.
This twelve-week Understanding the International Marketplace (UIM) program is divided into marketing and finance. For the marketing portion, students are taught principles of marketing, exploring international market potentials and promotional campaigns. For the finance section, students learn economics, accounting and statistics.
Upon the completion of the program, students have an option of pursuing internships at businesses around Vancouver area. The minimum internship period is six weeks but can last longer depending on the student and the company's schedule.
Since the program runs every twelve weeks, we will be getting new students every six weeks and three months. Usually, I provide businesses with the resumes of potential candidates one to two months prior to the internship start dates. This gives the time for the companies to schedule interviews with potential students and to prepare projects and tasks for the internship.

Sophia comes from Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean, where she worked at a Human Resources Consultancy firm as Recruitment Selection Manager. She is perfectly fluent in both of Canada's official languages. When she first moved here, she taught French.
Sophia is hard at work improving the Internship Program already: "We are revamping it to make it more appealing to international students, based on the feedback we have received. In the short term we also want to revamp the program for domestic students."

Sheila has been working in the career education and employment services field since 1995. After three years managing a career centre and doing career guidance with youth at King George Secondary School in downtown Vancouver, she was hired by UBC Career Services as a Recruitment Consultant. Langara College Board Chair announces new President
David Chiang, Chair of the Langara College Board of Governors, today announced the appointment of Dr. David Ross as the College's incoming President effective November 1, 2008 for a 5 year term.
“It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Dr. David Ross as Langara College's incoming President," says Chiang. “An accomplished academic and administrative leader, his breadth of experience spans 19 years of academic, corporate, and administrative successes, with marked strengths in strategic planning, financial management, facility development, enrolment management, student-centred learning, community partnership development, marketing and fundraising."
Most recently Vice President Administration and Student Services at Kwantlen Polytechnic University - a position held for the past seven years - Dr. Ross joined Kwantlen's Marketing Faculty in 1994; became Department Chair in 1996; Undergraduate Business Chair in 1997; and the Associate Vice-President Advancement and External Relations in 1999.
Dr. Ross has also held faculty positions in Marketing and Entrepreneurship at Langara College, the University of New Brunswick, and the Shad Valley Program based in Waterloo, Ontario where he worked with gifted and high potential Canadian high school students.
