Andy Ackerman is the President of the BCLTA, Chair of the North East Library Federation and past Chair of the Fort St John Library Board which he continues to sit on as a Board member. Andy is a trainer for BCLTA, having put on a number of Trustee Orientation Program workshops and Board Chair during the past few years.
He is a strong advocate for libraries and is currently on the North Peace Literacy Alliance Executive. He also sits on a number of other Boards and is an active volunteer for Scouts Canada, Fort St John Child Development Centre, United Way, Tourism Fort St John and the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre . Andy retired from the BC Ministry of Environment at the end of June, 2007 and is President of his own consulting company, Myriad Consulting Inc. (www.myriadconsulting.ca).
One of his specialties is strategic planning and he has worked with a number of companies and Boards to develop their strategic plans. Included in the process that he uses is a review of Mission and Vision statements, a review of how Boards are functioning and recommending policies and procedures that better service the Board and organization.

Michelle Wong is currently the Director of Evaluation and Strategic Directions for the Office of the Representative for Children and Youth in Victoria, BC. As a life long lover and user of libraries and information, Michelle is a strong believer in the role that libraries play in creating social capital within communities and improving the quality and outcomes of people's lives.

Areas of Interest
My major areas of research are information retrieval (IR) and digital libraries. I have done research and supervised doctoral dissertations in IR in text, multimedia, and the Web environments. My teaching areas reflect my research interests; I have taught courses on digital libraries, digital image collections, information retrieval (both theory and practice), indexing and abstracting, and electronic information systems
Biographical Sketch
I joined SLAIS in July, 2003 as Professor and Director of the School after an academic and professional career in Canada, the US, England and New Zealand, which began with an undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia, thus bringing me full circle.
I received a B.Sc. from UBC and an M.Sc. from McMaster University, both in Chemistry, an M.L.S. from the University of Western Ontario, and a Ph.D. in Information Studies from the University of Sheffield, England. I held professional positions with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited in Ontario as a Technical Information Officer, and with Agriculture Canada as Librarian at the Kentville, Nova Scotia, Research Station.
Before joining SLAIS I served on the faculty of the School of Information Sciences, University of Pittsburgh, USA for 15 years, most recently as Professor. While there I chaired the Doctoral Studies committee, and served as Department Chair for three years.
I have also held appointments at the School of Library and Information Studies at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, Canada, the School of Library Science at the Institiut Teknoloji MARA, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand
I have been active in the Information Retrieval and Digital Library research communities, serving as Conference Chair for the ACM International Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval in 1993 and the ACM International Conference on Digital Libraries in 1997, and as Conference Chair for the 2002 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science & Technology.
I am currently on the editorial boards of ACM Transactions on Information Systems, Information Processing & Management, Information Retrieval, and Text Technology.

Eric joined VPL in December 1985. He obtained his Chartered Accountant designation in 1979 and prior to taking up his position at the Library he worked at Thorne Riddell Chartered Accountants (now KPMG).
Eric is married to Trish and has three daughters: one in University, one in high school and one finishing elementary school. From February 2001 to May 2003, Eric was the Acting Director of the Library while still maintaining his official role as Director of Corporate Services.

Oct. 6, 2009 - Allan MacDougall, the founder and CEO of Raincoast Books in Vancouver, has retired.
The 62-year-old made the announcement Tuesday in front of all Raincoast staff members in the company's Vancouver warehouse.
In a release, MacDougall says he's stepping down to spend more time with his wife and three children. His retirement is effective immediately.
The new CEO is John Sawyer, who has been with Raincoast for 16 years and is considered the architect of many of the company's systems and operations.
A Raincoast spokesman says Sawyer plans to run the business along same lines as MacDougall did, and isn't planning any dramatic changes.
MacDougall founded Raincoast 30 years ago.
In that time, the company has become well-known as the Canadian distributor and co-publisher of J.K. Rowling's smash Harry Potter book series, which has sold 11 million copies in this country.
In January 2008, Raincoast announced it was shutting down its publishing arm, blaming the appreciation of the Canadian dollar.

These free 6-hour workshops introduce you to sources of career and labour market information available at the library and on the web.
You'll learn to select and evaluate sources for your current and future career and employment searches
You'll receive hands-on practice in VPL's computer lab, retrieving information from various electronic sources and the Internet
You'll receive assistance with the completion of your employment action plan
You'll learn lasting research skills and resources that will help you with future career changes
The workshops are open to anyone receiving Employment Insurance, Income Assistance or Reachback, or anyone unemployed and legally able to work in Canada.
The workshops are free, and are sponsored by Service Canada

Paul joined VPL in June 2003 from the Burnaby Public Library where he had been Chief Librarian since 1989. He has been involved in various professional activities since 1989, including serving as President of the Canadian Library Association and the British Columbia Library Association. Presently, he is Chair of the Library and Archives of Canada Council on Access to Information for Print-Disabled Canadians, and a Member of the Canadian Heritage Public Lending Right Commission and the PLR Executive.
He is also Chair of the Canadian Urban Library Council Copyright Committee; Chair of the Copyright Forum, which is responsible for addressing digital copyright issues with the Federal Government; and a resource person to the International Federation of Library Associations' Copyright and Other Legal Matters Committee.
Paul, as a Sessional Lecturer, has taught graduate courses on public libraries and collection management at UBC's School of Library Archival and Information Studies from 1983-2002, and is an adjunct faculty member with SFU's Masters in Publishing Program.
In 2002, Paul received the Canadian Library Association's Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award, and the British Columbia Library Association President's Award for contributions to the Association. In 2001, he received the University of British Columbia's School of Library, Archival and Information Studies Alumni Service and Leadership Award.
Paul graduated with a BA from the University of Saskatchewan in 1969, and received his MLS from the University of British Columbia in 1974.
