June 19, 2008 - Following a strong recommendation from the Search Committee, Professor Jim Kronstad has been appointed Director of the Michael Smith Laboratories (MSL) for a five year term, effective July 1, 2008.
Jim Kronstad is an internationally renowned scientist who has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills, respect and vision to continue bulding on MSL's founding mission of promoting biotechnology research and teaching at UBC.
His research transcends common boundaries and spans three of the four core focus areas of the MSL. Recognizing that biotechnology encompasses many areas, Dr. Kronstad envisages expansion to include investigation of problems of global significance such as climate change and sustainability.
Jim Kronstad was one of the original faculty members recruited to the Biotechnology Laboratory by founding Director, Michael Smith.

Mr. Tergesen is one of the founding shareholders of Burcon Capital Corp., which acquired B.M.W. Canola Inc., in October of 1999 and subsequently changed its name to Burcon NutraScience Corporation.

Garth Greenham's experience includes 15 years in management with Johnson & Johnson (McNeil Pharmaceutical), where he directed many key global product markets in the human health care area. Dr. Krieger is Vice President, Regulatory Affairs at OncoGenex. She received a Ph.D. from Rutgers University and an M.B.A. from the Darden School at the University of Virginia. Her 24 years of experience in regulatory and clinical affairs includes 23 years at five biotechnology companies in Seattle.
At Genetic Systems Corporation (currently owned by BioRad Laboratories) she was Vice President, Regulatory, Clinical and Quality Assurance. During her nine years there she led a team that obtained approval for blood banking tests for HIV-1, HIV-2 and hepatitis, as well as approval of other tests for infectious disease.
Subsequently she spent seven years at CellPro, Inc. where she worked with Dr. Jacobs to obtain two approvals from the FDA for the CEPRATE ® SC, a stem cell selection device. The first approval was based on data from patients with breast cancer and the second demonstrated the utility of the device in tumour removal in patients with multiple myeloma.
At NeoRx, Dr. Krieger led the regulatory group developing two oncology products: one for the treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and the second for multiple myeloma.

Sally Greenwood brings over 18 years of experience in the non-profit, health care and social services sectors. Alan Lindsay has extensive experience in building companies and taking them public on recognized stock exchanges. He is currently Chairman, President and CEO of MIV Therapeutics, Inc.
Before coming to MIVT, Mr Lindsay was the Chairman, President and CEO of Azco Mining Inc. and was also the Chairman of GeneMax Pharmaceuticals Inc., the predecessor non-reporting company, which he co-founded in 1999 and assisted with financing prior to leaving the company in 2001.
Prior to this, Mr. Lindsay was responsible for building a significant business and marketing organization in Vancouver, Canada, for Manulife Financial, a major international financial services corporation.

Roberts is a Human Resource executive with extensive experience in compensation, recruitment, employment law, performance management, and the development and implementation of HR policies and practices. Michael joined Angiotech Pharmaceuticals in March 2004 as Vice President, Human Resources.
Following graduate school, Michael worked for Nortel Networks in a number of HR management roles, most recently Senior Manager, Executive Compensation Policies & Programs. Michael then joined Ballard Power Systems, Inc. in 1995.
As Director, Human Resources, Michael developed and implemented Ballard's key HR policies and programs, including innovative compensation, recruitment, and recognition programs. During his tenure, Ballard grew from 175 employees to over 1,000 employees. From 2002 to 2003, Michael was Vice President, Human Resources for NxtPhase Corporation.
Michael holds a B.A. (Hons.) from the University of Calgary and an M.B.A. from the University of British Columbia.

Don Lay has more than 25 years' experience in technology, finance and communications. Most recently, Don was CEO of Contec Innovations, a TSX Venture-listed mobile software company delivering sports content to users in emerging markets.
Prior to Contec, Don was a founder of One Degree Capital, a company that financed and worked with early-stage companies in the food, technology and nutraceutical industries; he was also a founder of China MobileSoft ltd., a private wireless software company with operations based in Nanjing, China that was acquired by PalmSource Inc. in January 2005 for approximately US$28 million.
Prior to forming One Degree, Don worked for four years providing retail and institutional investor relations, as well as corporate financial services, to Forbes Medi-Tech. Prior to that, Don was successful in enterprise software sales, support and project management.

Bashir Jaffer is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants since 1976. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England & Wales.
Mr. Jaffer brings to Chemokine 30 years of extensive and diverse experience in public practice, entrepreneurial, professional, management and leadership roles in business and with community organizations. Mr. Jaffer was previously Chief Financial Officer of Veridicom International Inc., a publicly traded company in the field of biometric software and hardware development. Prior to that he was the owner and President of a travel management company from 1998 to 2003, and from 1983 to 1998, Mr. Jaffer was a partner at a firm of chartered accountants located in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Mr. Jaffer has previously worked for a public company and an international CA firm in London, UK and also with KPMG (previously Thorne Riddell) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (previously Coopers & Lybrand) in Vancouver. Mr. Jaffer has also served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of United Way of Canada and also as the Board Chair of the United Way of the Lower Mainland. Currently he serves on the Board of Providence Health Care.

Michael Patrick joined Kinexus in May 2005 and leads the company's information technology initiatives. He is responsible for developing an innovative and focused IT architecture and strategy that supports and extends Kinexus overall business goals and direction.
Mr. Patrick has over thirteen years experience with information technology. This includes time as head of IT for a global clinical research organization undergoing explosive growth as well as consulting engagements for the College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Michael Smith Foundation.
He has a strong background in project management, database development and system maintenance. Prior to this he spent several years teaching networking and database design for a division of IBM. At present he is completing his MBA through the Management of Technology program at Simon Fraser University.
