March 22, 2010 - Late last week, Jack MacDonald, CEO of Compass Group Canada and ESS North America, announced his plans to retire in October.
MacDonald has been heading up the Mississauga, Ont.-based contract-catering company since 1996. In a letter to friends and colleagues, MacDonald stated that when he joined the company as CEO, Compass' revenue base was approximately $67 million and it employed 3,000 associates. Today, its managed revenue is approaching $1.5 billion and it employs almost 25,000 associates.
To say it best, it has been one heck of a ride," said MacDonald. I feel very honoured to have been part of the team that's climbed a mountain never before dreamt of in our sector of the hospitality industry."
After MacDonald hands over the leadership of the day-to-day operations in October - to a yet-to-be-determined successor - Gary Green, CEO, Compass Group North America, has requested that he stay on as chairman of the organization until September 2012 to assist the new CEO oversees the future growth and success of the company.
MacDonald has spent 25 years at senior executive levels of a number of Canadian and American corporations. He has served as the Chairperson of the Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research and on the board of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. Jack has a strong customer service orientation, which together with his operating abilities, makes him a strong leader.
As a Maritimer, MacDonald was educated in Nova Scotia, graduating from Acadia University with a B.Sc. in Math and Engineering.

As Vice President Finance, Kate Labou is responsible for managing the company's financial reporting, forecasting, accounting services and internal controls. She joined Hcareers as the Corporate Controller in 2001 and was promoted to her current position in 2005. Kate served on the board of Hcareers from 2002 to 2004 and has been an active member of the executive team since 2002.
Kate has earned a solid reputation for her strong analytical abilities, leadership and creativity. Over the years she has achieved numerous successes, most notably in the areas of financial reporting and re-engineering. Prior to joining Hcareers Kate was employed as Controller of Leisure Canada Inc., and from 1998 to 2000 was the Controller of Triathlon Mapping, a subsidiary of MacDonald, Dettwiler & Associates. While with Triathlon, Kate transitioned the accounting for 3 new acquisitions and implemented a consolidated accounting platform.
Kate holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Carleton University and earned her CA designation in 1987 while articling with Clarkson Gordon in Toronto.
