Natalie Erickson is the Chemistry and Physics Co-op Coordinator with the Faculty of Science and has been helping students discover their careers through the co-op program since 2004. After graduating from SFU's Business Co-op program, she joined the University College of the Fraser Valley's Career Centre as their Science and Technology Co-op Coordinator. She worked with the students in the Fraser Valley for several years before making the move back to SFU in Spring 2007.

One of the things that she enjoyed most as a co-op student at SFU was the ability to explore different career options and try out different industries. Now as a Co-op Coordinator, Natalie is excited to be able to provide students with that same opportunity and help them to find their passion. She encourages students to make the most of the resources available to them and to explore as many different companies, industries and sectors as possible.

Teaching Chemical Biology - molecular mimicry, glycomimetics, protein-ligand interactions, immunochemistry, enzyme inhibitors, NMR/molecular modeling, drug and vaccine design

Our group is studying the nature and origin of carbohydrate mimicry for the purpose of drug and vaccine design. We take our leads from molecular mimicry displayed by Nature. Our goals are the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of recognition that can be used to tailor specific immune responses or inhibit specific enzymatic reactions. The results have implications for the control or treatment of bacterial and viral diseases, diabetes Type 2, and cancer.

Dr. Pinto was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka and received his B.Sc. degree in Chemistry and Ph.D. from Queen's University. Dr. Pinto served as Chair of the Chemistry Department from 1999-2004, and is currently Vice-President, Research at Simon Fraser University.

Dr. Pinto received the 1992 Horace S. Isbell Award of the American Chemical Society, the 1993 Merck Frosst Award of the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC), the 2002 Bernard Belleau Award of the CSC, and the 2005 British Columbia Innovation Council Frontiers in Research Award.

He is a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada, and was elected to the Academy of Sciences of the Royal Society of Canada in 2003. Dr. Pinto is a pioneer in the field of chemical biology, having developed novel NMR/molecular modeling protocols for protein structure determination and the study of ligand topographies essential for drug and vaccine design, and is the founder of Mimos Therapeutics Inc.

With an exceptionally strong record of research funding, Dr. Pinto also has a proven ability to attract investment. He has brought in approximately $5 million in funding as Principal Investigator since 2000, and has been co-PI on 20 grants in this same time period.

See Zymeworks Inc. Company News section for more information about Dr. B. Mario Pinto.

As a coordinator in the field of cooperative education, my role is multi-faceted. My days may include facilitating a workshop on portfolio development, coaching a student to successfully conduct a self-directed work search, or writing an article for the online community.

Alternatively, I could be found presenting to a group of students on the benefits of co-op education. In addition to exploring opportunities with local employers I might also be engaged in discussions with employers as far afield as Quebec or Japan, in industries as seemingly disparate as nutrition science and habitat conservation.
