A partner in the ownership of Abbotsford Printing Inc. with wife Alice, and husband and wife team Bob and Dorothy Dyck, Johannes Klawitter started to dream of a career in printing at age 16. Growing up in Germany, Johannes learned through his church of the need for printing apprentices. After a tour of a print shop, Johannes asked his parents to allow him to apprentice in the field, and to his delight, they agreed.

The apprenticeship took him away from home at 16, and he trained for three years as a letter pressman. Three years in bible school followed, as Johannes studied to become a minister. This course of study brought him to Abbotsford's Western Pentecostal Bible College for a year, when he was reunited with his passion for printing. He undertook an offset pressman apprenticeship locally, meeting up with Bob Dyck, his future business partner.

Dedicated to his trade, Johannes belongs to the Fraser Valley Club of Printing House craftsmen, and was closely involved in the management of
the group for 10 years. Chair of a province-wide printing competition for eight years, Johannes is dedicated to constantly upgrading print technology and techniques as they become available. His official title is Production Manager, but Johannes helps wherever needed, and loves the variety that his work presents.

Johannes shares the Abbotsford Printing Inc. philosophy that the staff are like a race team: everyone has a part to play, and if each team member does a great job, then the team is that much stronger.

When growing up on his family's Abbotsford dairy and poultry farm, Abbotsford Printing Inc. President Bob Dyck never dreamed that he would be the proud owner of Fraser Valley's oldest printing operation. A graphic design course in grade twelve spawned his passion for printing, as he became more aware of the variety and bounty of printed material that touches everyday life.

Bob trained as a journeyman pressman, then turned to farming for eight years. But the printing bug had bit him ... and so he returned to his adventure in printing. In 1986, Bob was hired as a part-time pressman for Abbotsford Printing Inc. (then located at the corners of Hazel and Railway), and was soon offered the position of production manager.

The owner left Bob in charge for two weeks, and upon his return, offered Bob the company, insisting that he wouldn't have sold it to anyone else.

On November 1, 1988, Bob, in partnership with printing colleague Johannes Klawitter, bought Abbotsford Printing Inc.

Then an eight-staff printing house, Abbotsford Printing Inc. now employs 18 staff. Bob loves the variety of projects that he comes across daily, and enjoys watching as his clients' companies grow - sometimes starting out with small black and white print jobs, and moving to full-colour brochures and catalogues.

He views every print project as a 'custom' job: seldom is the same print job repeated in exactly the same way. Bob is passionate about his business, and observes that the print industry is interesting and ever-changing: the technology is continually improving.

In his spare time, Bob enjoys golf, woodworking, and spending time with his family. Bob & Dorothy enjoy working together, and are proud of the business to which they have devoted themselves.

In the Abbotsford community, 'Dorothy Dyck' has become somewhat of a well-recognized name. The humble and gracious co-owner of Abbotsford Printing Inc. would blush at such a statement, but the former Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce President and Executive Director of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association has nothing but love for her hometown, and rolls up her shirtsleeves to help in any way that she can, giving back to the community that has shown Abbotsford Printing Inc. so much loyalty over the years.

Abbotsford Printing Inc. takes on many gratis promotional printing projects annually, both large and small - recognizing the power of the printed word to raise awareness and funds for special causes and non-profit groups. Often, it is Dorothy Dyck that liaises with these groups, and volunteers on special event committees and task forces throughout the community. She is the past Chair of the Crystal Gala Foundation (a fundraiser for breast cancer) and is a board member of the Abbotsford Police Board and the BC Police Board.

One of the smiling faces that greets Abbotsford Printing Inc. customers on the front line daily, Dorothy (like all of the staff) believes in the importance of customer service and relationship-building. She asserts that without knowing her clients and their companies, she cannot understand their business needs, and direct them in the most effective and economic way. Abbotsford Printing Inc.'s goal is to create the most effective printed item for their clients.

Dorothy, a graduate of MEI, is proud to say that every job that she ever had involved design and colour: from working in a fabric store, and a photo studio, to printing. She was also an award-winning paper tole instructor, and is delighted to be able to continue to apply her passion for the visual in her role at Abbotsford Printing Inc.

I came to Canada two years ago with my husband and family, and, after we settled, I felt it was time for me to pursue my career once more. I've had an avid interest and a passion for the print industry for many years, and so it seemed the natural choice. My background is in design and project management for the security industry, however, in 2002, I made a career move into account management for a commercial print company, a job that I really enjoyed. In 2003 I left the company to have my third and final child; it was then that we decided to immigrate to Canada and start a new life.

My goal is to provide clients with solutions to increase the profitability of their companies, and to manage their business needs, whether It involves managing projects, advising on colour schemes or simply re-ordering their company stationery. Abbotsford Printing for me is a company I'm proud to be a part of; working together as a team to provide great customer care, and to have our customers come back time and time again is true job satisfaction.
